每年都不能省!毛孩健檢這件事,我踩過的坑告訴你

I used to think my kitties were fine as long as they were healthy, but then…

When it comes to checkups, I really learned my lesson the hard way. My Mimi and Maoqiu, one’s a mix and the other a tabby, they’re like my babies. But I was so naive before, thinking as long as my cats were eating well, sleeping well, and seemed energetic, they were okay. But… were they *really* okay? Around 2024, Mimi started drinking a lot of water and constantly running to the litter box. I initially thought she was just drinking more, but when I took her to the vet, I found out her kidneys were already starting to have problems!

The vet told me that many cats develop kidney disease because of long-term consumption of unsuitable food, or because they aren’t checked regularly and it’s discovered too late. He explained to me that cats are very good at hiding their discomfort, and won’t show it until it’s often already in the middle or late stages. The vet said, “Just like people, early detection means early treatment, right?” I really regretted it when I heard that. If I had known the importance of regular checkups earlier, maybe Mimi would be doing better now.

Since then, I’ve started seriously researching pet nutrition and I take them for checkups every year. Now, I even pay close attention to their poop, because the vet said the condition of their stool can also reflect their health!

What exactly does a pet checkup involve? Here are three key areas you need to know.

I recently saw a TVBS news report about pet checkups, saying that just like people, our furry friends need regular checkups too. The vet on the show mentioned that pet checkups can generally be divided into three parts: physical examination, blood tests, and imaging tests.

Physical Examination: A thorough check from head to toe

This one is pretty straightforward. The vet will carefully check your pet’s physical condition from head to toe. They’ll look for discharge from the eyes, inflammation of the ears, dental problems, skin redness or swelling, and enlarged lymph nodes. The vet will also feel their belly, listen to their heartbeat and breathing, and check for any abnormalities.

Blood Tests: Understanding internal organ function

This is more important, as it can reveal your pet’s internal organ function. The vet will draw blood to test their blood cell count, liver and kidney function, blood sugar, cholesterol, and more. This can show whether their liver, kidneys, pancreas, and other organs are having problems. The vet told me that a blood test is like giving your pet a full-body “checkup” and can help detect potential diseases early on.

Imaging Tests: More in-depth diagnosis

This is a more advanced test, usually done when abnormalities are detected. X-rays can check bones and lungs, ultrasounds can check abdominal organs, and MRIs can check the brain and spinal cord. The vet said that imaging tests can provide more detailed information to help diagnose diseases.

Important Note: The vet said that the focus of checkups varies depending on the pet’s age. Young pets need to pay special attention to growth and development, while older pets need to pay special attention to chronic diseases.

Besides checkups, daily care is also essential!

In addition to regular checkups, daily care is also very important. This includes feeding them suitable food, providing clean water, maintaining a hygienic environment, providing adequate exercise, and most importantly, spending more time with them!

I recently discovered that Maoqiu really loves playing with pine cone balls. He chases it around every day and has a blast! Also, I give them some chicken breast freeze-dried treats as snacks, and they absolutely love them!

Also, pay attention to their oral hygiene, brush their teeth regularly, or give them dental chews. And, regularly clean their ears with pet cotton swabs, but be careful not to insert them too deeply!

It’s 2026, don’t be lazy anymore!

It’s 2026 now, everyone! Remember that your furry friend’s health is the most important thing! Don’t be like I was before, regretting it only after problems arise. Take them for regular checkups, pay attention to their daily condition, and give them the best care possible, so they can stay healthy and happily accompany us for a longer time.

I wonder how your furry friends are doing at home? Have you noticed any particular changes? Remember to observe them closely, and if you have any concerns, be sure to take them to the vet right away!
